Jada Pinkett Smith Says She and Will Smith Have Been Separated For 7 Years

Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have been separated for seven years.

The news was revealed in a sneak peek of Jada's conversation with NBC's Hoda Kotb. The full story will be shared in Pinkett Smith's upcoming book, Worthy.

Jada said she and Will have been living "completely separate lives" since 2016.

Kotb said, "It was not a divorce on paper." Pinkett Smith replied, "Right." Hoda responded, "...but it was a divorce." Jada answered, "Divorce."

Why didn't the power couple reveal the separation? Pinkett Smith said she and Will were "just not being ready yet ... Still trying to figure out between the two of us how to be in partnership ... In regards to, how do we present that to people? We hadn't figured that out."

What led to the separation? Jada said, "Why it fractured...that — that’s a lot of things ... By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be."

Will they ever get a real divorce? Pinkett Smith replied, "I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through ... whatever. I just haven’t been able to break that promise."
