BERTIE COUNTY, N.C. — Bertie County Manager Juan Vaughan confirmed that at least two people have died in a tornado this morning, after Tropical Storm Isaias brought strong winds to the area.
Neither Gov. Roy Cooper or Vaughan shared any details about the victims' identity.
Just before 2:30 p.m., great news came out of Bertie County: a mother and two children who had been unaccounted for, were found safe.
That wrapped up a multi-agency search that had stretched from the early hours of the morning.
Teams had to move fallen trees and sift through the debris of homes to search for the missing people.
Sheriff John Holley said he's been with the office for 38 years, and hadn't seen anything like this.
"Just to go back now - in that area - it don't look real," he said.
He'd been familiar with that community, and said the change was like something out of a movie.
