Police in January launched a criminal investigation into whether an officer used excessive force in the arrest of a man suspected of jaywalking and trespassing after he walked across the parking lot of a business already closed for the day.

A former Asheville police officer has been charged after body camera video appeared to showed him beating a black man accused of jaywalking.
Christopher William Hickman has been charged with assault by strangulation, assault inflicting serious injury, and communicating threats, according to the Buncombe County District Attorney’s Office. Click here for more details from News 2
