Mistakes First Time Home Buyers Make

Buying a home can be overwhelming. Especially if you are a first-time home buyer, but you have some help now, thanks to TikTok. “PureWow” took a look at the #FirstTimeHome hashtag to find the biggest mistakes first-time home buyers are making.

  1. Skipping the air quality test. You can’t always see mold. Because of this, it’s important to do an air quality test to test the air for mold spores that you can’t see with the eye.
  2. Ignoring cracks that indicate structural issues. Not every crack will be a concern, but the bigger they are, the bigger the issue likely is and can be a sign of structural issues like decay, poor design, water damage, or subsidence.
  3. Making large financial decisions before you close. Doing anything that changes your bank account significantly, for better or for worse, can be a huge red flag for your credit check. Don’t buy a new car, take out a new line of credit, close a credit card, or even change jobs until you close on the house.
  4. Sacrificing home quality for “must-haves.” You may be limiting your search criteria and potentially miss out on a home that is good for you. Also remember that the foundation and potential of the home are more important than flashy details.
  5. Trying to go on your own. Don’t skimp out on working with a real estate agent because they get a percentage of the sale – the money they save for typically outweighs this. Plus, they’ll handle negotiations, know what homes in the area are worth, and help use the home inspection to your advantage.
