The Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run 2021

How many races can say they are celebrating almost three decades of history? The Women’s Only 5K Walk & Run is a 29-year-old tradition in Guilford County, thriving despite natural disasters, community changes and even COVID-19. Much like the brave women this race supports and celebrates, the heart of this event is strong and has survived.

2020 threw us our biggest curveball, but we pivoted quickly to a virtual race – engaging close to 900 women and successfully raising more than $34,000 for mammograms, education and support for those fighting breast cancer. Our 2021 race will continue to be virtual, but we look forward to celebrating 30 years of racing in 2022 with an in-person event and celebration.

As Debbie Cunningham, Senior Vice President, Behavioral Health, Women’s and Children’s Services, says “We certainly miss seeing thousands of women come together in solidarity to fight breast cancer, but were so inspired by our virtual racers last year. We cannot wait to be together again. Until then please understand that your support is more important than ever. Join us!”

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. In 2021, it’s estimated that about 30% of newly diagnosed cancers in women will be breast cancers. More women need our support than ever before. Skip Hislop, Vice President of Oncology for Cone Health says it best, “The breast cancer fight continues through the age of COVID and the Cone Health Cancer Center hasn’t missed a beat. The scholarships and support funds raised by the Women’s Only will help us meet people where they are. These funds can be used in clinics or at our new mobile screening events. Women in this community are counting on us.”

We are so grateful for your continued support and know that together we can succeed. We hope you will join us and help us continue to inspire, empower and celebrate these amazing women here in the Triad.
