Voices And Vision: These Rappers & Soul Singers Are Emmy Award Winners, Too

2021 Award season is breezing by!

The 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on Sunday, September 19, from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and some of televisions biggest stars are slated to make an appearance at this year's show.

Dolly Parton, Taraji P. Henson, Jada Pinkett-Smith, Anthony Anderson, Stephen Colbert and more television elite are will be presenting at the big show, hosted by legendary comedian Cedric The Entertainer. The first time host, and star of CBS' The Neighborhood, said this year' show will be a bit more intimate due to coronavirus.

"It was going to be a much bigger audience there. At first, the idea was to really bring it back full steam ahead and now, with the new variant, there’s been some sizing down."

Emmy Award nominee LL Cool J is also set to present at this year's award show. The rapper turned actor has been nominated four times in his nearly 40-year career: three of which were for his producer role for Spike TV's Lip Sync battle, while the other acknowledged the star's work as host of the 54th annual Grammy Awards. Although LL has yet to take home Emmy, he's in good company of rappers and R&B singers who've been acknowledged by the Television Academy for their talent.

Donald Glover, a.k.a Childish Gambino

The comedian-rapper-actor made Emmy history with his 2017 wins for both Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series thanks to his hit FX series Atlanta. Gambino became the first Black person to win an Emmy for directing a comedy.

Two years later, the rapper took home two Grammys: one for Song Of The Year (This Is America) and Best Music Video (This Is America).

The ten-time Grammy Award winner is apart of the small, elite group of stars who've actually attained EGOT status. The "All Of Me" singer-actor won a Creative Arts Emmy in 2018 for producing the best variety special winner, "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” Legend is one of the youngest members of the EGOT club and the first Black male to achieve the honor.

The Queen hasn't slowed down one bit since hitting the scene in 1981 with her woman empowerment hit "Ladies First" ft. Monie Love. In 1995, she took home the Grammy for Best Solo Rap performance for her hit record "U.N.I.T.Y". Fast forward to 2015, Latifah took home the Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie for Bessie in which she produced and starred in.

The Chicago rapper turned actor has been the face of conscious hip hop for over 25 years. In 2002, he won his first ever Grammy for Best R&B Song as a songwriter on his collaboration with Erykah Badu for "Love Of My Life (An Ode To Hip-Hop)". In 2017, Common became the first rapper to ever win an Emmy, Grammy, and Oscar after taking home the award for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for co-writing the song “Letter to the Free”, which was featured in director Ava DuVernay’s award-winning Netflix documentary 13th.

The "Be" singer is just a Tony away from an EGOT.

Jennifer Hudson is no stranger to winning awards. Just two years after being booted off American Idol, J. Hud won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress her role as "Effie" in 2006's Dreamgirls. In 2014, she won the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album for her role in The Color Purple musical. Fast forward to September 2021, Jennifer won an Emmy for her role as an executive producer on “Baba Yaga".Like Common, she's also just one award shy of an EGOT.
