Doc

Doc is a cute 2 and a half year old, approximately 12 pound Shih Tzu mix with lovely soft and scruffy fur. He was owner surrendered from an unsettled home situation.

Doc is a sweet little guy who really craves human affection, but only from females. He is quite friendly and he bonds quickly. He enjoys tummy rubs. He is a snuggly guy who is very much a lap dog and even enjoys being a couch potato after a nice walk.

Doc will let you hold him like a baby for hours. He will get up on your lap with his paws on your chest and nuzzle your neck like he wants a hug.

He adores ALL female humans and is cuddly and sweet with them.

He is great when he is with female family, including teenage girls, a happy and friendly pup who is oh so cuddly.

He loves to stay close to his female family, happily following them around.

However, Doc seems to have a significant fear of men, including boys. He will bark at their movements in a home setting and hide, obviously terrified. He has shown no signs of aggression, just fear growling and barking.

In public, Doc is instantly waggly and friendly with new females, running up for loving, but he can spot a man a long way away and will grrrr and become concerned. However, he will correct (leave it) and he will settle back down IF the man ignores him and stops approaching or if the person he is with redirects him.

Here at the shelter, we have two big men and Doc has become perfectly fine with them cleaning his kennel, including picking him up to move him as needed. He is fine when he sees them, no barking or growling. He does not desire to be affectionate with them but coexists with them perfectly fine, which is a really good sign!!

Basically, Doc needs a new home experienced with dogs with specific fear issues so that he can be appropriately corrected and redirected until he quits worrying about new men.

He walks great on a leash if a female is walking him. He loves to take long walks and explore. He enjoys checking out new places, just becomes concerned when he spies a man. More experience in public places will help him immensely.

He will not walk if a man has the leash and tries to run away in fear if his leash is handed to a man.

He is great in the car and enjoys rides.

He is crate trained.

Doc seems to be well housetrained as far as pee is concerned. Occasionally he may have a poop accident if his owner does not pay attention to his eating and pooping schedule. If you pay attention, he is nicely housetrained.

He will do best in a female only family experienced with dogs, a family who can continue to gently socialize him to men passing by and coming to visit.

He needs a home without children since he is also afraid of boys (probably a history of abuse) and even female children would certainly want to bring home friends, including males.

If there is another dog in his new home, it would be best if it were an easy going female. He is perfectly happy as an only dog.
