Movers for Moms®Drive to Help Mothers in Shelters

Community-Supported Program Aids Moms in Crisis on Mother’s Day

Greensboro NC, Though Mother’s Day is intended to be a joyous occasion for women across the country, thousands of moms will be overlooked on this special holiday because they are forced to live in shelters as a result of domestic abuse or homelessness.

To ensure moms in crisis receive the love and appreciation they deserve this Mother’s Day, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® Greensboro is hosting its Movers for Moms® collection drive to provide critical gifts to local women staying in community shelters this spring.

Heartbreaking statistics from the Domestic Violence Resource Center state that one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, and an estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year.According to a national study from the New York State Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence, approximately 25 percent of homeless women are homeless because of violence in the home.

This year, the Greensboro moving company is working with local schools and businesses to collect essential care and comfort items for women at Piedmont Family Services. Some of the most-needed items this year are:

-Home safety items: (outlet plug covers, cabinet locks, safety gates, etc.)

-Diapers & Pull ups & Wipes

-Cleaning supplies: (disinfectant wipes, sponges, dish soap etc.)

-Laundry items: (detergents, baskets, etc.)

-Gift cards: (Walmart, Target, Food Lion, etc.) & bus passes

-New, unused car seats and booster seats

-Family appropriate board games

-First aid items: (band aids, thermometers, first aid kits)

-Baby items: new clothes, rattles, bath items, developmental toys (age 0-5), books (age 0-5)

-Potty chairs

-Household items: (dishes, silverware and small appliances in working order – new or gently used)

-Linens, comforters or blankets (new or gently used)

-Storage containers (preferably with lids)

“Family Service of the Piedmont is a private nonprofit agency providing quality support services, advocacy and education for children and adults dealing with domestic violence, child abuse, mental health and financial stability. By providing support services and resources to people experiencing these issues, they are better able to live healthy and productive lives, thereby creating safer and healthier families,” said Heather Renshaw, Development Coordinator for Family Service of the Piedmont.“Last year more than 17,000 clients came to Family Service. Each of these individual interactions could be life-changing for a family in crises. It also produces a ripple effect that spreads positive change throughout the community.”

This spring marked the 12th anniversary of Movers for Moms®. Since its introduction, the programhas expanded nationally to 41 states and more than 300 franchises. Last year was the program’s most successful year to-date, with more than 300,000 items collected for donation to hundreds of shelters across the country. This year, TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®’s goal was to collect more than 310,000 items for moms in need across the country.
