Charlotte to Host World Curling Tour Sanctioned Event

The Charlotte Curling Association is pleased to announce the fifth annual Southern States Mixed Doubles Bonspiel is back and bigger than ever! The event, to be held December 28-30, 2018, is a World Curling Tour sanctioned event, drawing a field of international competitors hoping to earn points on the World Curling Tour.

Spectators are welcome! There is no admission charge to watch the competition from the Charlotte Curling Center’s large warm room and spectator area. Visitors are encouraged to ask questions and socialize with participants. Local craft beer and wines are available for purchase from the club’s full bar.

Play begins at 5:00 pm on December 28 and goes until 10:00 pm; continues will a full day of competition on December 29 beginning at 8:00 am and going until 10:00 pm; and concludes on December 30 with quarterfinals at 9:00 am, followed by semifinals and the championship.

The event will follow the mixed doubles rules of the World Curling Federation. The field consists of 24 mixed doubles teams. (Each team consists of one male and one female curler.) Pool play will narrow the field to eight playoff teams, each of which will win a cash prize.

The Charlotte Curling Association is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization founded in 2010 with a mission of increasing awareness and participation in the sport of curling and promoting the spirit of curling in the Greater Charlotte community. Its dedicated facility in North Charlotte opened in December 2014. The 17,000-square-foot facility features 12,000-square feet of ice, plus locker rooms, social area and bar, and is wheelchair accessible.
