More about Art State: The art exhibit, Art State: Carolina on My Mind, will showcase collaborative artwork created by pediatric patients in the Arts For Life program at Brenner Children’s Hospital. Artwork is inspired by North Carolina state symbols, landmarks, and the products created in our state that we all know and love. From posters full of 2D images, to branches blossoming with paper dogwood flowers, to three-dimensional cardinals, this show is sure to have everyone in attendance bursting with state pride.Kelsey Brown , program assistant for Arts For Life, says, “When Arts For Life teachers walk into a hospital room to tell a patient and family they are putting together a show for an art gallery, eyes light up . In preparation for our upcoming art exhibit, Art State: Carolina on my Mind ,patients and family members have discussed their favorite things about North Carolina.Learning about our state's emblems, history, and inventions has been educational for teachers and students alike! (Who knew overalls and barcodes were invented in North Carolina?) Every Arts For Life artist puts their own creative take on illustrating North Carolina's treasures.Walking into a hospital room of an Arts For Life patient is often like walking into an art gallery.Art is taped to the walls, adorning hospital beds, sitting on window sills, or hanging from an IV pole. Art makes a sterile place feel a little more like home during a lengthy hospital stay.Patients and their families feel pride when showing artwork to other family members, friends, and hospital staff and they get to share a part of themselves. Our upcoming Art State: Carolina on My Mind art show is a wonderful opportunity for the community to get a sneak peek into the creative spirit of the hospital families we serve. It’s not to be missed!Lauren Duncan , Director of Youth Programs at Saw tooth School and long-time Arts For Life volunteer, says, “ Both Sawtooth and Arts For Life focus on providing high-quality art education to our communities, so Sawtooth is honored to work with Arts For Life and host the gallery show Art State: Carolina On My Mind . As an Arts For Life volunteer and a Saw tooth Director, I've seen the impact that creating art can have on youth. I've seen pride emanating from young artists after completing their artwork, relief from the stress of long hospital stays, and joy inthose artists using pencils, ink, and paint to express themselves. Through our work together, we hope to enrich more lives of young, creative artists around the Triad."
